Fred and Hyla Cundiff were born and grew up together in Wilkes County, N.C. In their professional careers each made significant contributions to the education of African American students, both in Wilkesboro and Greensboro. Fred Cundiff came to Greensboro to teach in 1954. He became the first African-American Assistant School Superintendant in 1969, playing a crucial role in the relatively peaceful integration of Greensboro's school system in the early 1970s. Hyla Cundiff was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, primarily at the Washingon Street, Bluford, and Vandalia Elementary schools.
