The scrapbook, created by Mattie Griffin between 1896 and 1897, documents Griffin's experience as a student at the State Normal and Industrial School (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The scrapbook is annotated throughout and contains materials relating to Griffin's participation in the Cornelian literary society, an arithmetic exam, a Single Entry Examination for bookkeeping, YWCA ephemera, wax seals from friends, and pictures of the school's farm and barn (possibly the second barn). The scrapbook also contains materials relating to a production of Country Fair, including ephemera and textile pieces from costumes.
