Sherley Mae White (1923-2014) served in the Women's Reserve of the Coast Guard (SPARs) from 1943-1945. She served as a drum major for the SPARS marching band at the Biltmore Training Station in Palm Beach, Florida. She later transferred to the Coast Guard Base in Ketchikan, Alaska. White was born on 18 May 1923 and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana.The Women's Reserve of the Coast Guard (SPARS) accepted her for service on 25 May 1943, and subsequently sent her for initial Boat Training at the United States Coast Guard Training Station, in Palm Beach, Florida. The SPARS promoted White to Seaman Second Class after she completed training. White remained at Palm Beach Training Station and performed duties with the SPARS marching band as band major.
