Marjorie R. Suggs Edwards (1917-2005), of Passaic, New Jersey, worked in personnel, special services, and motor pool with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and Women's Army Corps (WAC) from February 1943 to December 1945. Following her military service, Edwards had a long career as an interior designer, primarily in Cincinnati, Ohio. Marjorie Randolph Suggs Edwards was born and raised in an immigrant community in Passaic, New Jersey, by her Cuban grandmother. She held several manufacturing and social work jobs before enlisting in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (later the WAC) in February 1943. Edwards attended basic training with a segregated African American unit in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. During the course of the war she performed personnel work at Fort Custer, Michigan; attended Special Services School at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia; served as special services officer at Fort Sheridan in Illinois; and worked in a motor pool at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Discharged as a sergeant in December 1945, Edwards attended the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City on the GI Bill and studied interior design. She operated an interior design shop until moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, in the mid-1940s to marry. She continued her design work for forty years, and in retirement was a volunteer at the Durham VA hospital and a local elementary school. Marjorie Edwards passed away in 2005.
