Teressa Jenkins Lawrence (b. 1956), of Wilson, North Carolina, served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1981. Teressa Jenkins Lawrence was born 13 February 1956 in Wilson, North Carolina. She attended a segregated elementary school and was involved with Girl Scouts of the United States of Americirca Lawrence graduated high school in 1974, and began studies at Howard University in Washington D.C. When she could no longer afford to attend college, Lawrence decided to join the United States Army. In the summer of 1977, Lawrence began basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, and was then assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, where she worked in transportation and supply. She was soon promoted to supply secretary for the captain's office. When Lawrence became pregnant, she decided it was time for her to leave the military because she wanted the opportunity to raise her child herself, and she received an honorable discharge. She and her then-husband subsequently moved to Georgia. Lawrence moved to Kernersville, NC, in 2000. She began classes at Guilford Technical Community College, and then later the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with a focus on social work.
