Barbara Snead (b. 1933), of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, served in the United States Air Force as a WAF (Women in the Air Force) from 1953 to 1955. Barbara Snead was born in 1933 and grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After graduating high school, she worked for a year as a keypunch operator for Armstrong Core Company, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force as a WAF. After completing basic training, Snead was sent to New York Community College in Brooklyn, New York for training as a dental lab technician for nine months. While there, she met her future husband. They married on January 23, 1954. Snead was then assigned to a post in Del Rio, Texas and then to Randolph Air Force Base as a dental lab technician. While she was at Randolph, her husband, who had completed his service, was hired as a civilian in the tabulating department at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Snead became pregnant with her first daughter in 1955 and received her discharge from the service. Snead and her husband moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and settled there permanently.
