Mary L. Sutton of West Branch, Michigan, was born in Bay City, Michigan on 29 May 1924.. She spent her primary school years living with her grandparents in West Branch and graduated from Bay City's Central High School in 1941.She worked a number of civilian jobs after graduation, and married Cameron Sutton, an active-duty member of the United States Army, August 2nd, 1943. In 1945 Sutton left her job at Defoe Boat and Moat Works to pursue enlistment in the United States Women's Army Corps (WAC). She received her basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Sutton's first duty assignment was to Pyote Army Airfield, Texas. She was later reassigned to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, where she processed pay for service members leaving the military. Sutton left the service after her husband was discharged from the army, due to the conclusion of the war in the European theater. She later worked as a teacher and died 24 June, 2014.
