Virginia Ann Sutton was born January 18, 1947, in Mount Olive, North Carolina, the second of two children for her parents, Mr. and

Mrs: Preston Kenneth Sutton. She graduated from Mount Olive High

School in 1964. In the Fall of that year she entered Meredith Col-

lege, Raleigh, North Carolina? where she majored in religion and French and joined the membership of the Kappa Nu Sigma Honor Society. She re— ceived a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Meredith College in l968. Prior to college graduation she worked as a North Carolina State Government Summer Intern, preparing a research study on recidivism for the North Carolina Correctional Center for Women. After graduating from college, she accepted a fellowship From Wake Forest University to

work for the Master of Arts degree in religion.
