The department was under the direct superivision of the State Department of Public Instructiong Division of Negro Educa~ tion. For four years it had been possible to take the teachermtraining program in connection with high school work. In the fall of l9259 hOWu every this program became an entirely separate curriculuma Depending upon the academic level previously attained, a graduate of this depart-

ment would receive either an Elementary A or an Elementary B Certifi-

cate from the State Department of Public Instruction. During the first

four years of the existence of this departmentg sixty young women grad» uated with such certificates.20]

The areas of religion, music, literaa ture, and service were those in which the students took Special inter- est. The Young Men's Christian Association, the Young Women's Chrisa tian Associationg and the Friends of Africa were all conducted by the

The latter was a missionary society “to promote interest in and increase the studentsI knowledge of Africa and the missionary efforts being carried on . a . [in] that great continent which is the

original home of our race.”203 The students also sought to assist in
