79 the possible eight college—owned buildings, one sees that the campus at the end of President Trigg's administration had excellent physical fa- cilities. Meanwhile, the over—all campus appearance was being im— proved. In l922 the campus, already enclosed on four sides by improved streets, was in the process of being Hlaid off in walks and drives with a view to planting trees and shrubbery on the entire campus, thus leading to the aspect of a great park with buildings artistically lo— cated."177

Even though the physical plant at Bennett was excellent, solid financial support was still lacking. In l9l7 the North Carolina Confer— ence was ordered to enter a campaign to raise $25,000.00 as an endow-

ment for the college. Just before that action, a group of Bennett alumni had proposed a campaign plan for the conference which was de- signed to result in $5,500.00.179 By 1920 the college still had no en-

dowment, and President Trigg was requesting $200,000,00 for such pur-

poses.180 In l922 the requested endowment was $500,000.00.]8] Rising

expenses were also reflected in the rising tuition fees, about $114.00
