steam heat, good ventilation, and ample plumbing facilities. A new classroom building was added to the campus by 1925.

Known as the Academic Building (now John H. Race Hall) this three-story

brickbuilding172 contained nine large rooms used for three scientific

laboratories and other educational purposes. During this year only two of the three wooden buildings existed,]7h thus again giving a to» tal of seven college=owned buildings. By 1926 the Carrie_Barge chapel,

not mentioned earlier, had been remodeled, thus creating the possi= bility that eight college—owned buildings were a part of the 1926 pro— perty.

A new building not belonging to the college was built on col- lege property at the corner of East washington and Macon Streets during the year l923nl92A. This was the Carnegie Library, begun by the Carne= gie Foundation and maintained by the city of Greensboro as a public library for Negroes. Opened in 192h, the small brick building (still used today) housed a carefully selected collection of 150 volumes, to
