During the three years that Wallace was in office, some signiw ficant advances were made at Bennetto A president‘s home was built with donations from the North Carolina Conference. Grades one through four were eliminated. The curriculum included study of the particular prob~ lems of the Negro in American society. In addition, the relationships between the college and various elements in the city were good, Some disturbing developments also took place during the time, however. The most disturbing of these was the weak financial condition of the col- legeo It had no endowment, thus its future was not insured. Furthere more, the yearly appropriations from the Freedmen‘s Aid and Southern Education Society were obviously inadequate, causing very low Faculty salaries. These salaries were perhaps the reason for the second dism turbing development, the decrease in the total number of faculty memm bers and in the number with advanced degrees,
