logue about the faculty. At this time there were only nine actual facu ulty members at Bennett, excluding three faculty members at Kent, two

matrons, and one office assistant. members had a doctorate; that was Dr. Wallace with a Doctor of Letters degree. No other members held any graduate degrees, and only three of them held Bachelor of Arts degrees.14] Thus, there was a decrease not

only in the number of faculty members, but also in the number with ado

vanced degrees. The inadequate faculty salaries‘42 probably caused

this serious situation.

Reports about Kent Home, on the contrary, gave evidence of ade- quate and wellumanaged finances. .Mrs. M. L. Donelson and two assisw tants taught thirtyneight girls in l9l4-l915 and forty-five girls in 1916-1917.“‘3

Relations between the college and city appear to have been CO“ operative in l915. The Chamber of Commerce had agreed to help find ways and means to install.a central heating plant. The State Normal School for Girls (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) had contributed enough carpet to cover the steps and room floors of the

girls' dormitory. And various contributions solicited by Professor

W. B. Windsor had enabled the college to purchase thirty-five modern
