eight years was slightly less than during Chavis' termo The total en—

rollment for l9ll-l912 was 238,11 while the total enrollment the fol—

lowing year was 235.1“* The basic courses of study remained the same as during Chavis' term-~Collegiate, Academic or Preparatory, Normal, and English (”the grades“). In l912, for instance, the number of students in each of the levels just mentioned was thirteen, twentyuthree, forty-eight, and-one hundred fifty-one (grades one through eight), respectively, Music, the Bible, and domestic science also continued to be taught.“5 An addi- tional course was added during Peeler's term, agriculture as industrial education for boys. It was begun by the l906-l907 year and was fully described in the l912 college catalogue. Peeler, himself the director,

said that the aim of teaching agriculture was to show the difference

between a too large and poorly cultivated farm, and a small but
