began his eight—year presidency in 1905-1906.92 -The Rev. Mr. Peeler was familiar with the school, for he had been an English instructor in the years l887~l888 and l888=l889 under the Rev. Mr. Steele.93 By the fall of I906, Peeler held a Master of Arts degree from Clark University in Atlanta and a Bachelor of Divinity degree. By 19]], he had been granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cammon Theological Seminary.9l+ Dr. Peeler's philosophy of education was something of a combina- tion of those of Grandison and Chavis, plus an additional emphasis of his own. For Peeler, education was a matter of 1'the head, the heart, and the hand.” That is, he considered that the courses should teach a student to think for himself, after which he should have the abilities to "work out what he has thought out.“ If he could not thus use his hands, his "head trainingml was useless.95 As for the third element in education, the heart, Dr. Peeler wrote, ”Believing that Christianity is essential to success the attempt is made to make the very atmosphere [of

the college] Christian."96 Dr. Peeler considered that these three ele-

ments and secondary aims of education at Bennett were necessary in or-

der to carry.out the primary aim of the school, which was inscribed
