A closer look reveals that the Primary Department embraced the first, second, and third grades. The fourth, fifth, and sixth grades made up the English Course, upon completion of which a certificate was granted. A Normal course of three years and a College Preparatory course of three years made the Academic Department. A graduate of the Normal Course received a diploma. Three College courses, each lasting four years, were available to the students. The Classical course led to an A.B. degree, the Philosophical course to a Ph.B. degree, and the Scientific course to a BOSC. degree.83

The Musical Course provided four years instruction in piano, two years in reed organ, instruction in vocal music as demanded by the individual student, and general vocal instruction, without charge, to

the entire student body.8£+

The Biblical Department offered a Special Course and an Advanced Course of one year each, intended for local

> preachers or anyone unable to take a full course elsewhere. Subjects taught in the Special Biblical Course were Bible studies, Bible and church history, Bible doctrine, and sermons and preaching. The Ad- vanced Biblical Course consisted of exegetical theology, historical theology, systematic theology, and practical theology.85

Dr. Chavis said in 1900 that the academic work was better
