Their approprim ation to the college for l900al90l was merely $1,800.00, about oneehalf the amount granted twelve years prior to this time. “The present approe priation of $l,800,” Chavis said, ”will not properly give support to a president and one strong professor.” Chavis suggested that one source of income to help clear the school of its debt be money from the sale of property behind the school grounds.71

Continuing academic improvement was noticeable at Bennett about the turn of the century. The faculty of l899—l900 numbered ten, not including the staff at Kent Home. Professor Thomas and Miss Fannie Henderson of that year proved themselves very faithful workers. Miss Thomas, Chavis said, took charge of the Primary Department and other

work for a salary onemthird of what she could have demanded. At one

time she received a salary from the Society of only $l00.00 per year.72

The faculty for l900nl90l numbered twelve, including two assisa tants. Three professors had doctor‘s degrees, two in divinity and one in medicine. Two others had Master of Arts degrees, one of those also having a Bachelor of Divinity degree. Dr. John P. Morris was singled out as a patient and earnest worker for ten years and a source of enm couragement for the president.73 The entire faculty, however, was cone
