train, and walked the remaining fourteen miles to Greensboro. Upon their arrival at the College, they were greeted as "young heroes of the race.“ The story continues, however, and Corrother's own words convey the meaning best:

A prominent white lawyer was consulted about our diffi= culty with the agent in High Point, a white lawyer known to be friendly to our race.

'You have a most excellent case, and could win it——if you were white,l he said. 'My advice is: Don't. You will be misunderstood, and will only hurt your race. Write to the president of the railroad company, stating the facts courte» ously and without exaggeration, and you will hear from him.l

We accepted this advice and wrote accordingly, and re— ceived a reply from the president, expressing his regret, and assuring us that the agent in question had been instructed to discontinue his unwarranted treatment of the road‘s coloured patrons. Perhaps we had not walked in vain.

The affiliate of the college, Kent Home maintained a stable

existence during Grandison's presidency. The three years of its super-

vision under Miss Buckbee, a new superintendent, exactly coincided with
