The number of faculty members increased to six in l889-l890, seven in 1890~l89l, and eight in l89lul892.28 John P. Morris was appointed to the professorship of Greek and mathematics in l889, at the same time that Grandison was appointed.29 He remained an active leader of his race both in Bennett College and in the North Carolina Conference for many years.30 James D. Corrothers taught physical culture and introe duced athletics into the school.33

The number of students at Bennett was also increasing. There were 172 in Grandison's first year, 222 the next, and 230 his last.32

A look at the courses of study for the middle year, l890-l89l, shows 6 students in the college level. The total number of students in the academic course numbered 216, of which 185 were in grades one
