49 never met the amount requested by the Society. A request for $250.00 in 1889=l890 resulted in a contribution of $167.00.23 Two years later the Conference gave $471.00, a large sum, even if it did not reach the $750.00 requested.2l+ Perhaps pride in the successful presidency of one of their own race caused the members of the North Carolina Conference to make this generous increase in their giving.

The average annual income from student fees during Grandison”s

three years was about $757.00,25 about $150.00 more than the same type

of income during Steele‘s last year.26 The yearly fee for a boarding

student at this time was $50.00. If there had been about fifty boardw ers,27 each paying the full amount, an annual income of $2,500.00 (still much less than school expenditures) would have gone into the Society through Bennett. The quite different figures thus clearly indicate that the Bennett students were still unable to contribute very much to their own educational expenses.

Academic improvement continued under Grandison's leadership.
