economy, and wealth, and the much mooted Negro problem will have found its only abiding, because only true, solution.l7

The costs of running the college increased. Although the value

of the property for l890~l89l and l89lal892, $30,000.00,I8 rose only

$5,000.00 from what it had been in 1889,19 the expenditures during that

time period rose more than $3,000.00 Whereas, the expenditures during

Steele's last term, 1888~l889, were about $3,000.0020

the expenditures during Grandison‘s last term were over $6,600.00 The income to the Society on behalf of Bennett seems to have come from Northern donors, the North Carolina Conference, and the stu- dents themselves. In relation to expenditures, however, this income was extremely inadequate. Dr. Grandison spent some of the time as president soliciting contributions from the North.22 The North Carolina Confer—
