The departure of Steele and his wife in 1889 was met with an

expression of regret and appreciation by members of the North Carolina

Conference for their "untiring, faithful and devoted work."108 The

quality of faculty and the achievements of the student body during Steele's term appear to have been excellent. More land was added to the campus and physical assets rose. The affiliation of Kent Home with the seminary and the chartering of the school as a college were out- standing tributes to Steele's leadership, and to the possibilities

ahead.
