cost of $1,500.00 The school property was valued at $25,000.00 in

1889.88 Facilities must have been crowded, for one building housed both men and women students and provided two recitation rooms.89 Although the Freedmen's Aid and Southern Education Society re- ceived on behalf of the school over $650.00 from student rent and inci- dentals,90 $164.00 from the North Carolina Conference,91 and more than $300.00 from other sourcesgga total exceeding $1,000.00--during the year 1887-1888, the expenses must have been much more, because the So- ciety appropriated about $3,600.00 that year for Bennett Seminary.93 Income from tuition and room-rent in 1888—1889 was a little

more than $600.00, and donations amounted to almost $200.00. The North

Carolina Conference donated $250.00, thus bringing the total, again, to

b more than $1,000.00. Yet expenditures for the year exceeded $3,200.00.
