Academic improvement was noted during the Rev. Mr. Steele's leadership. There were six faculty members during the 1883~l884 year.78 The faculty of 1887-1888 and l888=1889 appeared to be wellnqualified. The three professors who had master's degrees were those teaching the basic courses: the Rev° Mr. Steele, Greek and mathematics; Preceptress Clara A. Lunt, natural science and history; and Charles H. Moore, found— er of the (Negro) Percy Street graded school in Greensboro,79 Latin and

English. Rosa Bo Steele taught music, and Silas A. Peeler, later to

become one of Bennett's Negro presidents, was an English instructor.81 In the 1887=1888 year four different courses of study were listed in the report of the Freedmen's Aid Society--College, Normal, English, and Music," Eleven students were enrolled in the College course, 38 in the Normal course (requiring three years), 84 in the Eng- lish course (also three years), and 16 in the Music course, thus, after allowing for some students who were counted twice, making a total of 130 students.82 Three boys and three girls graduated that year from 83
