29 The seminary was looked upon with interest by the people of the state and the Greensboro area. The main interest throughout the state came from preachers of the North Carolina Conference. The interest From the Greensboro area was reported as universal.28 Parkinson re- ported his reception by the Greensboro people as kind and cordial.29 Although many of the white people of the town had expressed their hap- piness that the school had been started in Greensboro, an agent of the Society, reporting in 1875, said that "Little or no aid can be expected from the white people of the place.”30 The Negro people of Greensboro, however, were supporting the seminary with encouragement and money. A

"collection for land” in May, 1875, from ”the colored people of the

Methodist church in Greensboro amounted to one hundred and five dol-

lars."3]

The Society agent described the contribution:

This amount was made up of small contributions, the Sabbath- school children bringing their pennies, which, at the sug» gestion of their parents and pastor, they have been saving for this purpose. One little fellow, who had received a Sabbath—school Erize of a dollar, brought it and placed it on this altar.3
