2] established Zion Wesley Institute in 1880. Two years later it became Livingstone College of Salisbury.‘ In l9l0, Hood Theological Seminary was established on the Livingstone campus. Three other schools were established: One in Lincolnton, l892, one in Edenton, l893, and one in New Bern, 1902a The Lincolnton school, however, closed. Theological

education was offered through the Preacher‘s Institute, an in-service

plan created by the North Carolina Conference.7] Seen together, the

Negro Baptists and Methodists in North Carolina operated 23 successful schools for Negroes, in addition to two training programs for ministers.

It is clear that religious groups, especially among Negroes and Northern whites, felt a great responsibility to educate the newly freed slaves. The schools established in North Carolina by these groups un- doubtedly helped to satisfy the pressing needs of the freedmen for edu- cation and its fruits, the acquisition of skills and self-respect. Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, established and support— ed by white and Negro members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was

one of these schools.
