Southerng and Negro churches. Besides the Methodist Episcopal Churchg at least seven other

predominantly white Northern denominations worked to educate North Caro-

lina Freedmen. The American Missionary AssOciation, a non-denominaul

tional organizations had Negro schools at six locations in l870, accord-

ing to one source.,L+3 Three additional schools, established between

l880 and l8959 are referred to by another source”!+4

The Quakers in North Carolina may be grouped with the Northern churches because of their consistent opposition to slavery and their active support of Negro education. A recent scholar has said that the

North Carolina Quakers, assisted by Friends of other

Yearly Meetingsg including the Baltimore, London, and

Dublin, did more not only for the education of freedmen

but also of whites than perhaps any other agency in the

state during the Reconstruction period. Sources contain varying statistics about the number of Quaker schools in North Carolina, but fortunately, three sources have similar statis-

tics for the year l869. One source contains a report of 2h day schools

and 35 Sunday Schools for Negroes.”6 Another contains reference to 25
