The Freedmen”s Aid Society began work in North Carolina during the first year of its existence by founding two schools for freedmen.38

The length of their existence is not known. It is known, however,that

a school established by the Freedmen"s Aid Society existed in washingn

ton, North Carolina, during the year of l869.39 Records for the fol-

lowing three years, l870-l872, contain no references to Freedmen's Aid' Society schools in North Carolina“40 Records for the year May, I873, through May, l874, contain an important entry—=Bennett Seminary, Greensu boro, North Carolina.4l This school,later called Bennett College, was the only Freedmen‘s Aid Society institution of higher grade in North Carolina.42
