The United Mission Library in New York City, a receptacle for missionary reports of the United Methodist Church and the United Pres- byterian Church in the U. S. A., sent official reports of the Methodist Woman's Home Missionary Society concerning Kenthome, an affiliate in- stitution of Bennett College. In addition, several theses were borrow- ed from university libraries in North Carolina and other states.

Problems of the Research. The most serious problem one encoun-

ters is the lack of accurate information concerning the dates of the presidencies. The knowledge of these dates is important not only to

provide the framework for events, but also to allow for interpretation

of these events. In many cases the secondary sources give conflicting

accounts of presidential terms. Primary sources often reveal years during which a man was president, but the many gaps in the primary material often result in confusion over the beginning and the end of his term. Realizing the need to find these terms of office, the writer, relying on two premises, carefully evaluated the present material and made what seemed to be the best judgment under the circumstances. The first premise is that the presidential term coincided with the academ- ic year, not the calendar year. Any indications that this was not true are noted in the text. The second premise is that the primary sources are more reliable than the secondary sources. In the few cases where the implicit information of a primary source and the explicit statement of a secondary source agree, the clearly-stated date of the secondary source is accepted.
