time all of the Bennett presidents have been Negroes. The college grew rapidly during the years between l889 and 1926. Students and faculty increased, the curriculum was expanded, and the physical plant grew larger. Although a lack of sufficient funds constantly troubled the college, it was respected as an institution of quality education throughout North Carolina.

A decision within the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish

a school especially designed to meet the needs of Negro girls caused

the re-organization of the school in l926 into Bennett College for No-

men. The college continues to operate today with the goals set forth

in 1926.
