Description
This oral history interview conducted by William Chafe circa 1975 with Ike English primarily documents English's memories of race relations in Greensboro, North Carolina, during the late 1950s and 1960s. Of particular interest is English's description of hiring the first black secretary at Burlington Industries. He also recalls blacks attending church services at West Market Street United Methodist Church, pastor Charles Bowles' pro-integration sermons, the response of church members including Eugene Hood to desegregation, and general church participation in race relations. Other topics include his first impressions of Greensboro, his son attending Greensboro Senior High the year Josephine Boyd was there, conservatives in Greensboro, the tendency of Greensboro's larger businesses to be liberal, and the closing of city pools at the threat of desegregation.
