Dr. Joan Gregory was born in Montgomery, Alabama. She attended University of Montevallo, then known as Alabama College, State College for Women, for her Bachelor's degree, Peabody College for her Master's and Ph.D. She began working in the Art Department at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1964 and rose to the rank of Professor, and later served as Head of the Art Department.
