At the time of this interview (Spring 2022), Dr. Laura Pipe was Director of Teaching Innovations Office* and Associate Director of the University Teaching and Learning Commons (UTLC) at UNCG. She also was the faculty advisor to UNCG's Native American Student Association (NASA). Pipe begins this interview by talking about her family background, and education. She is descended from Tuscarora on her father's side, while her mother is Pennsylvania Dutch and Irish. She attended Texas Christian University for her B.S. in Journalism, Syracuse University for her M.S. in Higher Postsecondary Education, and UNCG for her Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a post-baccalaureate certificate in Teaching Sociology. She also discusses her career prior to joining UNCG. Pipe discusses her career at UNCG, which began in 2011. She describes her office and the duties of her job, which center around support for faculty development and teaching, and learning communities. She also discusses her research interests which include Indigenous pedagogy, construction of public and private space, and action sports. Pipe discusses her role as faculty advisor to the Native American Student Association (NASA), and describes what the group does and some of the programming it has implemented such as the Indigenous Safe Space. She talks about Indigenous pedagogy, obstacles that the indigenous community faces, as well as issues important to the community at UNCG and in the US in general. Pipe discusses her experiences during the COVID pandemic while at UNCG. She recalls how her job and the campus were affected, what her office did to support the faculty during this time, and how the pandemic has changed the way we work. Pipe concludes the interview by talking about how UNCG has affected her life and what it means to her, and where she sees it going in the future. *The Teaching Innovations Office (TIO) has since changed its name to Learning Innovations & Pedagogy
