At the time of this interview (Fall 2022), Simone Watkins was a senior student at UNCG. She begins the interview by discussing her family background, growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and her education before college. Watkins attended a different, private, school for her freshman year, but transferred to UNCG for her sophomore year. She discusses her Human Nutrition and Dietetics major, working while going to school, extracurricular activities, and what she does for fun. Watkins also discusses the Native American/Indigenous community at UNCG and her heavy involvement with the Native American Student Association (NASA) at UNCG. She explains the importance of the group and the activities they partake in. In particular, Watkins talks about the UNCG Land Acknowledgement, Powwows, and the UNCG Indigenous Safe Space training, which was her idea and a project that she worked hard to get started on campus. Watkins also discusses the challenges facing Native American and Indigenous people both at UNCG and in the US. Watkins also discusses her experiences as a student during the COVID pandemic and concludes the interview by describing the type of student that attends UNCG, her plans after graduation, and how UNCG has affected her life and what it means to her.
