Description
The materials date from 1943-1945 and documents Sarah H. Thorndike's military service with the United States Navy WAVES at Hunter College, New York and the United States Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island during World War II. She captured her service with candid images of comrades, posed group shots, and professional photographs of regimental reviews at Hunter College and Newport's VJ Day parade. Also, there is an aerial view of the Newport Naval Hospital. Many of the photographs have handwritten captions identifying comrades and events. The ephemera includes identification cards, an ink silhouette drawing of Thorndike, leave passes; menus; programs for events such as July 4th, plays, religious service, and Thanksgiving; travel guides for Boston, Massachusetts; and typescripts of prayer services. Of particular interest is the WAVES/SPARS songbook containing the lyrics to over forty songs and a two-page Thorndike family genealogy chart dating from 1777 to 1923.
