Description
Primarily documents the life of Jane Helms Vance and her service with the United States Air Force. Vance recalls fond memories of her time spent at Woman's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the computer and data automation training she received during her first assignment. She also explains her reasoning behind volunteering for service in Vietnam so that her brother, also in the air force, would not have to go. Vance describes the journey to Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam, the way she felt as the only female officer working in her office, and her belief that some military men resented her because they felt they had to be protective of her in all situations. Vance recalls the many places she was stationed over the years, her contentment with not having to manage people, and her belief that a person has to want to serve their country to be successful in the military.
