Alice Starr May was born on 21 July, 1926 and raised in White Bluff, Arkansas. In May of 1943, at the age of seventeen, May decided to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, which became the Women's Army Corps on July 1, 1943. She attended basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. May was then assigned to Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado to be trained in photography. Her next assignment was Eglin Field, Florida to learn about dark room photography and how to be a film projectionist. She was assigned to the projection room where she assisted in showing military test films to high ranking military officials, including General George S. Patton.
