Barbara Gunschel (1923-2007), of Bayonne, New Jersey, joined the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) on 26 Oct. 1943. She attended Naval Training Station in the Bronx, New York. On 15 Dec. 1943, she started Naval Training School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It is probable that during this time she received training in cryptography. She finished her training on 7 Feb. 1944 and reported to Washington, DC on 17 Feb. 1944.
