Bernice Bauks McCormack (1914-2007) of Marlboro, Massachusetts, was stationed in Africa while serving with the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Bernice B. McCormack of Marlboro, Massachusetts, was born on 14 March 1914. She attended nursing school at Symmes Arlington Hospital and then worked in the operating room of Marlboro Hospital. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in March 1942, and was stationed at Fort Adams and Fort Getty in Rhode Island until December 1942 when she was transferred to Charleston, SC, for overseas training. McCormack set sail later that month, with stops in Cuba, Trinidad, and Ascension Island before reaching Ghana on 12 January 1943.
